How many of us are spending our lives feeling stuck, overworked, under-appreciated, or unfulfilled? Or maybe you have a great job but still feel like there is something missing? As hard as I worked and as proud as I was of my accomplishments at school, work and home, I constantly felt like I wasn’t living my life to its fullest potential. On the flip side, I always felt so scared to move forward and out of my comfort zone.
Now I live a life that holds a bit more uncertainty, but I am nevertheless deeply certain of the path I am walking in this moment, a life of passion and purpose. It involves being an entrepreneur, an artist, a freelancer, a wife and a friend. It truly is a dream come true.
For me, like many, the overall objective is to live a happy life that’s secure and has meaning for myself and others, whether I am #winning or not. Whether I post it on Instagram or not. But it can be confusing and daunting to get there – to get to the place where you are actually living life by design and not by default. Here are 4 keys steps to making your dreams a reality.
1. DISCOVER YOUR STORY
Do yourself a favour and start listening to yourself. Cut out the noise and the distractions and the clutter. Have courage and delve deep into yourself and start to discover what fuels you. What makes you happy? What makes you tick? What gets you impassioned? What is your story and what do you want to share with the world? Meditation has been my north star in de-cluttering my mind to discern a purpose, a calling, a reason to get up in the morning.
2. VISUALISE YOUR IDEAL WORLD
Allow yourself to dream and dream big. One of the best exercises I do is to map out what my ideal day looks like. When do I wake up? Where do I go? Who am I with? How do I share my gifts with the world? How do I define success or love or happiness? These are all different things to different people, and overtime they change for each individual. I find it to be such a helpful reminder to strive for what I want on a real, day to day basis.
3. START EXACTLY WHERE YOU ARE WITH GRATITUDE
This can be difficult as you start visualising and dreaming of all the amazing possibilities that are available to you. It can be overwhelming as the struggle to get from zero to hero can be incredibly disheartening. But the gap from where you are to where you want to be truly isn’t that far. You can take stock of what you have now and give thanks for it. Then start believing that the things you want are already prepared for you, just waiting. So give thanks for those things, too. Spend 3 minutes a day writing out things in your life you are grateful for, then another 3 minutes writing out things that you want that you are grateful for.
4. TAKE SMALL STEPS
All it takes to move from dream to reality is one small step. And another after that. And so forth. And remember, you don’t have to have it all at once! Breathe, write your goals and tasks down, and DO! Everything will come in its own good time with consistent action. All of the notes above focus on inner transformation. The outer transformation is bound to flow from that. The urge to match your external world with your internal vision for yourself will come naturally. Inspired action that creates true and lasting change requires the courage to take risks, without any guarantees.
Give yourself permission to get excited about something and to build it to be a major part of your life. A real sense of fulfilment comes when you use what you are passionate about and what you are good at as a tool help others and to help yourself.
